What is The Sonoma Diet is a diet that lets you take your time to enjoy your food and in turn enjoy a new way of life. Created by dietitian Connie Guttersen, PhD, RD whose love of the Mediterranean style of eating helped her find a way to change the way people eat and lose weight. What is The Sonoma Diet?

Weight loss on the diet is accomplished by calorie restriction and portion control. The acceptable foods are controlled by using a "plate-and-bowl concept"; a 7-inch bowl is used for breakfast and a 9-inch plate for lunch and dinner. This not only allows for more variety but is also less frustrating then a calorie counting diet.

healthy food listThe emphasis is on generous amounts of delicious, nutrient-dense foods, and ten “power” foods, restricting any foods that have added sugar, saturated fats and refined white flour.

These power foods give you the energy you need while improving your overall health. This healthy food list consist of almonds, bell peppers, blueberries, broccoli, grapes, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes, whole grains, olive oil and a glass of wine a day. What a nice incentive for the end of the day.

Much like what you will find in most diets, The Sonoma Diet comes in phases. Well here we call them waves.

Wave 1

First get the garbage can out. You’re throwing away all the junk. All of the processed and yes, overpriced junk food that has all of those strange ingredients listed on the package; any food with hydrogenated fat and sugar. Some fruits and vegetables even though considered healthy foods to eat, will be banned because of the high sugar content. Wine too, but don’t worry, it’s only a brief stop.

This wave is considered the cleansing phase and lasts for about 10 days. And no, it doesn’t mean your having a Cheetos party now. You will have exonerated any desire for those little orange dyed messy balls. You will rid your body of the cravings of all such delicacies. Wave 2
