How Does South Beach Diet Work?
On the South Beach Diet program you lose weight by restricting the bad carbohydrates and fats such as processed foods, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, sugar, alcohol and fruit. The South Beach Diet encourages the good carbohydrates and fats that are found in lean meats, fish, whole grains, nuts and most fruits and vegetables. Olive or canola is the recommended oil of choice while eliminating butter, cheese and high fat red meats that are high in saturated fats.
The South Beach Diet works with three different phases. During each phase, you wean yourself from certain foods and incorporate South Beach Diet food instead.

South Beach Diet Phase 1
This phase is the strictest of all three phases but only last two weeks. During phase one you will be eating three well-balanced meals a day with approved South Beach Diet snacks in between. At this point, your South Beach Diet food will consist of normal portions of chicken, turkey, fish, vegetables, eggs, cheese and nuts and salads with olive oil dressing. You will eliminate the bad carbs from your diet like bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, sugar, alcohol and fruit. Hang on during this phase and watch the South Beach diet work.
The idea behind phase one is to banish your cravings of these bad carbs and sweets which cause your blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. Shortly after, your blood sugar declines leaving you hungry and lethargic. You will eventually lose the urge to eat these kinds of foods which are the main culprits of weight gain. This phase you should be able to lose anywhere from 8 to 13 pounds. As you see, the South Beach Diet menu is worth the first two weeks!

South Beach Diet Phase 2
This phase last has long as it takes you to reach your desired weight. So obviously it will vary depending how much weight you need to lose. Your results will be consistent in this phase but maybe not feel as dramatic to you. Your South Beach Diet food list will slowly increase by reintroducing some of the foods from phase one back into your diet but only in moderation and not too often. Bringing these foods back in small amounts will help you determine which foods you can eat and how much and still lose weight.
South Beach Diet Phase 3
This is not only your final phase but your life long phase. You have reached your desired weight by now and have seen the South Beach Diet work for you. You have learned a new way of eating for life. This stage is vital because it is here you learn how to eat to maintain your weight for the rest of your life. Being on the South Beach Diet, exercise is not a requirement however, you know as well as I, it sure doesn’t hurt. In fact it will only help shed the pounds away or maintain your weight you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
There is not a list of foods that are mandatory or restricted on phase 3 however by now you will have learned how to eat correctly and how to adjust your diet if the pounds start creeping on again. If you have swayed from the South Beach Diet basics and have had too many Twinkies, just turn around and go back to phase one or two. The South Beach Diet has now taught you to eat like a normal human being, maintaining your weight and achieving a healthy lifestyle.
The South Beach Diet is not so difficult and full of restrictions that it is too hard to follow. It really does become a way of life not over loading you one way or another on to much bacon or too much spinach.
